Got on the water about 8:30 AM and the wind was not bad. We went out to the middle of the lake and the fish were there. My customer, Paul, caught his first hybrid there before we had to look for a place sheltered from the wind. Up North a few birds were working and the fish were active, too. We landed the majority of the 143 fish there and went further North. The wind was increasing and the trolling motor could not keep up. I began using the drift sock and it worked great. We would start in 30' of water and drift about 1/4 of a mile in 20' of water and catch them the entire drift. Paul had just bought a boat and the reason he hired me was to show him the lake and demonstrate slab fishing. He caught on fast and he landed 3 of the four hybrids including the largest one at 6.5 pounds. My boat went 4-6 weeks without landing a hybrid. Now the last week has produced several each trip.
We finished the day at Deadmans. A huge school of fish were there, but by then the wind was blowing about 70 MPH or it felt like it. The fish are still on the slab and flies-by-night pattern. I experimented with a 3" sassy shad and caught a few that way also. Went in and cleaned fish for about an hour. No trip tomorrow, so I am resting.
