Do any of you experienced fly-tiers think you could take a large hook, say 4/0,and somehow tie a nylon weed guard on it to protect the hook point from snags/weeds? It would be just like a regular bass jig but no head on the front of the hook. Nothing else on it,just the hook and weed guard.

Do you want to learn to do this yourself, or have someone to do it for you so you can finish it out?

Do you want to learn to do this yourself, or have someone to do it for you so you can fin ish it out? I was just wondering if it was even possible. Would like to learn to do it myself if possible. I love fishing a jig for bass (I dont flyfish) but I dont allways want it to go to the bottom. If such a thing already exist maybe someone could point me towards a photo of one on the 'net?

Here is a page showing a traditional mono loop weedguard. http://www.derekspace.net/weedguard.htmHere is another page showing a few variations. http://www.flyfisherman.com/2012/02/27/get-your-guard-up/It's actually very easy to tie in a weedguard, provided you plan it out before hand and don't forget to leave room on the head for the front end, or forget to tie it in all together (I would never do the latter...usually). The trick with a mono weedguard is to use something that's stiff enough to repel weeds, but not so stiff as to cause missed strikes. If it's too weedless, it might be fishless too. There are a number of ways to make a fly less likely to catch on vegetation. I've been working on using deerhair as a weedguard on a bug that rides hook point up and that's turning out to be pretty successful. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/7278994/Upside_Down_Frog#Post7278994

Great info guys, thanks. I'm gonna try that system used by the guy in the video. If it works I will be able to use a worm or lizard wacky rigged on the hook,or a regular jig skirt. The metal weed guard on the Eagle Claw weedless hooks work "fair",but has it's flaws.
