Howdy fellas, I've got a 96' mariner 200. I'm trying to get the shift linkage adjusted properly. When I put it in the reverse gear the prop locks up both ways but when I put it in the forward gear it locks counter-clockwise but still spins clockwise. It does have some resistance and I can hear what sounds like a gear trying to catch but it wont lock up. Went to the lake this morning and put it in forward gear, when I started giving it some throttle it was buckin and thumpin, put it in reverse and all was well. One guy says shift dogs are goin out or maybe a broken gear tooth, another says possibly just needs adjusting. IDK? I adjusted the linkage as far forward as possible without loosing reverse in hopes that little extra bit is what it needs to lock in the forward gear. Curious about the prop spinning while in forward gear though, is that right? Appreciate any advice, tips and input. Thanks!

Fireman...iam going to try to explain how to set up the shift cable if this does not work then more than likly the doggs on the forward gear are worn or even the clutch dog is worn. So heres the procedure of adjusting the cable. Disconnect the shift cable the shift into forward at control box then pull back to neutral mark the brass sleave next to black slide the shift into reverse then pull back into nuetral slowly mark it there will be about a half inch or smaller gap between the two marks. Then mark the middle of the gap. Then move black slide to that mark.Next go to the slide on the engine and set the anchor slide to middle of the slide best way to find the center slide anchor forward till resitance is felt mark then slide to reverse till resitance felt mark then center the anchor then adjust the barrel nut till both center lines match up when cable is connected to anchor slide. And yes the prop will rachet clockwise and lock counter-clockwise and in reverse will lock both directions...Hope this help ....OPTI...

Hey thank ya much Opti! That sounds a helluva lot easier than how I was trying to do it. D/C shift cable, turn prop w/ foot while moving shifter until prop caught, match control box w/ that gear, loosen/tighten cable to match neede distance, drink another beer and cuss shift linkage, repeat 6 - 10 times as needed. I appreciate the info, take care.

Hey OPTI, should that barrel nut be a pain to turn? When I try to turn it, it torques the whole cable. Almost looks like there is a set pin pushed in on the end of the nut??? I was using that black, plastic round piece that holds the cable in place on that bracket as the adjustment??? Thanks again!

That is the barrel adjustment, the part that goes in the anchor point. Here may be a little easyer way. On the braket that the bottom cable layes in there is a place marked F-N -R it is over half way down the bracket toward the head. remove shift cable from anchor point and from the shift linkage by twisting that cable hold down. Manualy move the linkage to were the stud that holds the twisting hold down lines up with the N at the F-N-R on the bracket. Now adjust the barrel on the cable so that when the cable is anchored it falls right on the shift linkage atatchment point where the twisting part holds the cable. That should be the best starting point. Do this procedure with control box in nutral. If you have to move the adjustment barrel very much in either direction you have a problem. Cary
