A creek or a small pond. Greens like still water. They also like to stay by brush piles and close to the banks. Usually the late spring and summer months are the best for me to catch Greens. hooked

The farthest up stream reaches of a creek. Where ever there's a posibility that the creek would dry up. Smallest of small creeks. Any water that might dry up will usually support greenies before it will support any other predatory fish. I've caught some huge greenies out of small tank ponds that barely have any water left in them. Sometimes less than 4' deep and clay colored water. Caught greenies big enough to cover my hand.

One more: when the water fluctuates between low and very low like that, whatever other bream come into their habitat, they will cross populate. Some greenie males (and some bluegill males also for that matter) will sneak over ANY bream nest and do their business and move on without the male who was actually guarding the nest even knowing. The full-time male actually tends to the eggs and guards the fry. Basically raises fry that may not be his own.

+1 to Jagg's post above.

I love big green sunfish...but finding them isn't easy. Unfortunately, they have been given a bad rap so most pond owners try to avoid having them if at all possible.

To any creek near my house.....as mentioned above, they like still/slow moving water. In my opinion they also prefer gravel or rock bottoms more than just a clay or dirt bottom.

I have a nice little cove on the local creek where the water barely moves...rocky bottom with both shallow and deeper water so there is usually always some fish here for me, except during Winter.

Great information. Thank You for the replies.

Will the retention ponds around business likely hold green sunfish? No inlets or outlest. Some hold water all year long during the worst of drought. I guess the fish comein from the sewer drains.

To me the best greenies are found in still water. Backwater from creeks and rivers are great. Anything with lots of pollen/dirt stuck to the top of the water. I look for cover/banks in roughly 2-4 feet of water. Cast near the cover and they'll hit almost anything.

There are gonna be greenies in almost ANY retention pond. In my experience they are one of the most prolific sunfish species. They'll end up in water where nobody ever introduced any fish.

edit: I'm not talking fish of any size (6in being a good size retention pond fish), but numbers galore (and they're tenacious).
