I have a 1974 Evinrude 15hp motor that I stored for two years and have recently pulled it out and cleaned it up. It starts and purrs like a cat but I cant get anywater to pump and cool. I have replaced the water pump impeller and thermostat. I have also gone as far as removing the lower unit and power head from the motor to look for obstruction. Ive exhausted my options and dont have the money to take it to a shop. HELP!!! Im looking for ideas and tricks so I can get on the water before the crappie spawn is over.

Make sure you put the key in corectly, the veins are going the right direction, and the water pickup tube is put in right and all "O" rings are in correct locations. Not sure if you can put the thermostat in backwards or if it would make a difference but check it.

Re-check the water pasages. Cant think of anythign else.

Sounds like you know what your doing, but did you check and make sure the water tell-tale port is not clogged?

thanks guys, with a water hose, very little pressure and a home-made contraption.. I get water up and around the pistons and throughout the head from the lower unit tube that goes to the imperller housing. I can not get any water out of the 'pee hole'. I have tried a coat hanger but it seems too stiff and doesnt go very far into the hole. with the lower unit off I have worked the wire from top to bottom and bottom to top. I think the old impeller pieces are stuck in there but I cant get them out to save my life.

Think the 74 model doesn't have the pee hole.

NCNT that is an awesome website. That guy is a wealth of common sense information. Reminds me of my sons scoutmaster, great person.

Put the plug in.

My son and I have been working on a 1975 Evinrude 9.9 and a 1977 Johnson 9.9. I was running into the same issue with looking for the traditional tell-tale port on the 1975. Found this site and was blown away with the amount of info for these motors.
