12-15 lb big game should work just fine.

My best advice here is to go with P-Line CX-Premium in 12 lbs. test.

I've been using Big Game (Moss Green) 20# since 1996. Never had any problems with it. Small enough to cast a log way, strong enough to hold bass that I know of up to 13 pounds...

Hard to beat when you can get 900 yards for 7 dollars.

Start out with braid. More limp and way more managable for a beginner. Upgrade to mono/fluoro/etc as you get better.

Go with a good mono.....I love McCoys mean green but big game is good too. Braid is not at all forgiving with backlashes! Neither is fluoro. Braid gets knots that never come out and fluoro will break if it gets a bad kink in it.

Teaching my wife to cast one now, she can cast the one with the braid but not the one with flouro without rats nesting it. So my vote would be braid to start.
Oh and get the best reel you can afford, makes it easier to learn when you have a good reel.

For rigging spinnerbaits, big jigs and plastics I personally think you couldn't go wrong with clear 17 or 20 # Trilene XT so you can see it and pull it thru all the stuff along the shoreline. For crankbaits Big Game in 10 or 12# would be OK but the XT in those #s would be good too if you fish those types of baits near shore.

I use 8 pound mono on my medium setup, and I always fish from the bank. I throw crankbaits and spinnerbaits up to 1/2 oz and it seems to get the job done.

+1 - Great minds think alike!

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.
