Looking to purchase a 2010 f150, 4wd,from a family owned GM dealership that owns several makes of car dealerships. I test drove it all was good. I engaged 4wd and when I took my foot off the accelerater I heard what I would describe as a whirring sound. Salesman heard it and described it like jake braking on a semi when slowing down. He thought it was normal, but I said no way. You don't hear something that noticeable on a vehicle that is pretty new, only 33k miles. They had their service guy look at it, and took another 2010 fl50 off the lot and it had the same noise. So they said it must be normal. Not buying their story, I called someone in MN(where I'm from) who I trust and he said there should be no noise. Problem is either front differential or transfer case. So I called the dealerships Ford store and talked to service manager and he said to have it brought over and they'll take a look at it. He said it also could be a hub issue. But he said there shouldn't be a "noticeable sound" any time. Any thoughts on this from anyone? Never owned a 4wd.

Shouldn't be a noise. Problem is the make of the truck.

As long as you're too naive to admit that GMC and Chevy are the same company, you can keep telling yourself that.
The truck is still in warranty. If you're really set on that truck or any Ford 4wd and you have an issue like that, I'd try to take it over to a Ford dealer first and see if that is something they can fix under warranty. Sometimes if you can talk to a tech without having the truck there, they might have seen it a hundred times and know just what the fix is.
Don't worry about buying a Ford, I just like to get all these Ford guys like nitro777 worked up. He's got a nice new one with the ecoboost. The new Fords are good pickups (the old ones, 10+ years ago, certainly were not). I'm sure there will be a Chevy thread about someone having the same issue next week. The ford/chevy debate is a lot more even now than it was in the 90s.
Btw, I did that exact thing with my 2004 Silverado. I knew there was an open recall on the steering column. It would kinda halfway "stick" in a couple spots during a turn (not actually stick, but you'd hear a noise and feel a bump of sorts). Anyway, I bought the truck from a Nissan dealer because they had it priced way too low ($13.5k for a 4-year old crew cab with the big v8 and 42k miles) and took it straight to the Chevy house and got them to replace the steering column under warranty. Haven't had a single issue with the truck since. About to roll over 114k miles.

Not naive but understand that GM builds two brands that compete with each other for the same market as Ford, Dodge, Toyota and Nissan. Here we go. Let get it started. Just kidding, have fun with it.

All in good fun patriot. I have driven 3 chevy's. Never had a major problem with them. I drove chevy's when ford was having all those problems a few years back (5-10 yrs ago) you speak of.
Bucket don't fool around with a truck that may have problems. Either make the seller fix them, get the warranty to fix them, or RUN. I wouldn't mess with a possibly bad drive train unless I am %100 certain it is %100 FIXED.
Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

^^^ I agree with this.
Although im not fully convinced there is somethign wrong with the truck.
My uncle bought a chevy and the trans makes a little bit of a whine when your running. My dad swore it was bad(this is a used truck with 60K miles)The truck now has 180K on it and has never missed a beat.
I also think If you count GMC and Chevy as one that ford has never been #1 selling. However it seems like I hear them all advertising the motor trend truck of the year.. its just one wins it for the diesel, one for the half ton gas and the next for the small truck market, but they all brag on it as if it covers all the vehicles.

I asked the dealership to bring it to their Ford dealership in Austin and I called the Ford service manager and he said he will look it over today and let me know what he finds.

What is an innocent, honest advice-seeking thread without a little ford/chevy fun? Good stuff bucketmouth, let us know what happens. Don't be scared of a little warranty work, but also don't even think of buying that truck unless you know the issue has been fixed or will be fixed at no cost to you. Matt, I actually heard that Ford overtook GM's combined numbers within the past couple years, but I don't remember what source said that. Probably Henry Ford's grandson. Either way, the number of GMC trucks is dwindling quickly in comparison to the rest of the truck market. I hardly ever see new GMCs on the road nowadays. Chevy's are still flying off the lot though.

Go to the F150 forum or the Ford website and check for TSBs. I would get the address for you but seldom have a need to vist the site since I sold my problem child. I was a regular visitor out there for a while researching various problems. I think the decline of GMCs is related to GM dropping brands like Olds & Pontiac. The dealers that sold those vehicle also sold GMC trucks.

My F-150 doesn't make any noise when engaging 4WD.

Found out today that ford replaced the transfer case where noise was coming from. So it looks like I'll be buying it.
