I saw one at least that big up in the river one day a few summers ago...thing surfaced like a log about 80 yds. out. Easily 6, maybe 7 ft. long, looked to be a good 18" thick too.

No fish is too good for the grease.

That's about half the size of the TX state record alligator gar. I'm pretty sure it's over 300 pounds, caught from the Rio Grande.

I just checked and the state record for TX is 279 lbs, from the Rio Grande in 1951. I know that I have seen fish at least that big in bayous around Port Arthur and also in Sam Rayburn.

About 12 years ago my dad and I were coming back into Little Creek at Rayburn from running trotlines in his 14' jonboat. We were running down the middle of the boat lane (early June) when we ran up on an alligator gar that was well over half the length of the boat. We were on top of it before it knew we were there, and when it dove back down, it threw water all over my dad with it's tail. That fish was at least 20 inches wide. Man, I miss Rayburn. If I ever retire, I think that's where I'm going.

I saw people skiing in Rayburn in October this year. I ALSO saw 2 alligators, and one had to be at least 12 feet long. I don't think I have the fortitude to go out in a jon boat there. It is a good lake to fish though. smile (and yea, I know the subject was Gar) smile

i have seen gar that big down in choke canyon that will exceed 150 lbs. it is not that rare to find them that big here in tx. they are very common in the red river, especially that size.

There was an article with a picture of it in the newspaper today. It was a pretty hefty fish.
