Since I plan on getting a kayak, ive been reading up on them quite a bit and now I want to rephrase that sentence. I want to get a yak so ive been reading up on em'. There ive conformed! Anywyas, I read some where that trolling with a kay-- I mean yak is almost always a good idea. I was wondering how one would do this trolling, namely if it actually as simple as cast out, put rod in rod holder then start paddling or if there is more thought out in to it?

Cast out put in rod holder paddle a bit letting more line out then engage the reel set drag so it wont just get yanked from the rod holder ....thats how i like to troll im sure there are different variations

I troll a lot out of my yak. Actually I trolled yesterday at Grapevine and today at Lake Worth. I get started paddling then throw one rod out, loosen the drag enough I can hear it if I get a hit, and put it in the rod holder behind me. I repeat the process for my 2nd rod. Then I just paddle a slow pace. I have a fish finder so I pretty much know when I'm about to get into them and start getting hits. After I locate fish, I just keep paddling back and forth through the area. I like doing this better than anchoring and casting.

if you want to troll with two poles make sure you are atleast 25' and just release the line ont the second pole paddle a little flip the bell. I do that about 3 times to get enough line out without snagging the bottome paddling in between. works with sassy's but maybe not a really heavy lure. caught this one today 100 yards from shore before I even got all the line out to troll...FISH ON! http://youtu.be/Qwd2osv0ISw

Nice catch. I was expecting something like a huge Flathead or something by the look of the fight. Must have been using light line!

12 lbs line but medium action rod. I was also Grilling so the added movement makes the rod bend more. And striper put up a good fight as well

Any time I am moving from spot to spot I always have a pole or two in the water trolling for Sandies, more time in the water = more fish in my freezer.
I keep one pole in my pole holder with a leash attached to it just in case and I keep the second pole off to the left in my hands. Due to using a Hobie Outback I do not have to use a paddle and can keep my hands free and keep a pole in hand at all times. If I get a fish on my second pole I just slide the pole in my hand into its pole holder, with a attached lease, reel in the fish and set back up.
