LAKE FORK REPORT

The dog days of August are here. Heat is a major factor in planning your trip. If you are going to stay out in the sun take precautions: Use sunscreen, drink plenty of water, reduce the amount of alcohol intake, keep a hat on, and wet it if needed to cool down. Wearing a t-shirt under your shirt will help keep your body cooler. If you start to feel ill go in, its not worth a heat stroke. If you are not going to keep your catch, release them immediately. Fish will not do well in live wells when the outdoor temperature is over 90 degrees. I have been fishing half days with my clients either at 5:30 AM 10:30AM or 5:30 10:30PM. Fish have been caught in numbers in the early morning but, some days the evening bite is better. Be careful of underwater objects and trees if you plan to fish at night.

I am still using Lockhart black blade & skirt buzz baits with a trailer hook early in the morning and they have produced nice slot fish. As soon as daylight starts to appear I try some creek channels with some large Zoom or Berkley 10-inch worms in black or blue flake colors and Lockhart Spider jigs in the same color have been producing large fish also. Work these lures slow.

If the creek channels arent producing I race off to deep water humps and drop offs in 30 foot plus water. I have had success fishing these humps daily, catching a number of fish using a Carolina rig with Zoom French-fry type plastic worms in a watermelon color. I have also tried some tub baits lately with some success.

Trolling with some of Manns bait companies +30 and +20 crank baits in chrome color have been getting hits over road beds in open water. Use your fish graph. Spoon jigging near the bridges have also been reported doing well. Also try 1 oz spinner baits in these areas using black and white skirts with a large gold CO Blade

Now Largemouth Bass are schooling all over the lake. If you can get close to a school try using a rattletrap or a Lockhart Chuck-N-Spin behind the surface explosion and crank the lure through the school.

Around 7:30PM I might try using some top water baits for the excitement of the catch.

Take care until next week:
