I have always been one that had to learn "the hard way". The other day, I was fishing in the back of a cove in my "new to me" boat. A buddy of mine had met me and was going to get on the boat with me and I just happened to get up close and my trollin motor was sort of in a bind against the ground as I forgot to lift it.
I reached down and gave it a big 'ol yank and guess what? Yip! The rope broke! As if in slow motion, I proceeded to start to fall backwards with nothing anywhere to slow my fall. I fell from the front of my boat and didn't hit until I was in the middle of the seat as pretty as you please. Except I drove the middle of my back into the back deck at the same time. No broken body parts, but stove up a bit. And really really glad, that wasn't on video!

Like you said you learned the hard way. Same thing happened to a guide I was with back in January. He almsot feel completly out of the boat and it was cold as all get out that day. Glad you are ok and I bet you raise that trolling motor next time...

Stepping down on the bracket mount helps reduce some of the pressure on the release pin. Then pull the rope gently, the pin will release and the trolling motor will come right up. Don't ask me how I figured that one out.
