Just a warning for those of you who wade fish. I went to Lavon on Saturday to try and find some crappie up shallow with little luck, I did notice while wading that there were huge balls of fire ants all over the top of the water. Due to the flooding these guys have been displaced and it would be really bad to bump into one of these and have them in your waders before you realized it.

I've never seen such a thing. What are they floating on?

When I've seen them they appear to cling to each other. I think they do it to survive a flood, and then whenever they come into contact with something (you or dry land) they disperse.

I used to see this back when I waded creek bottoms hunting ducks. You best stay real clear of the "mass" of ants because the main "ball" will have "tenticles" like a jelly fish. Strings of ants climbing over each other trying to get to the main ball. I was standing in some slow moving water one morning and a huge mass floated by about 4-5 ft away. I noticed the ball had what looked like brown strings trailing behind but didn't pay much attention.....until I had 20-30 of the little biters giving me fits! NOT fun, especially 50 yards from any dry ground and carrying a shotgun. Fortunately nobody else but my partner saw the large, pale figure in his birthday suit bent over picking ants off his nether regions in near freezing drizzle. NOT a pretty picture.

I see cottonmouths all the time. Never been bit, thank Jesus! I'm seeing alot of these ant balls this year and I know that just the slightest touch means several bites before I know I bumped them. There are millions in these floating disasters. I don't even think you want them on your boat.

Seems like a little Gas and Match would do wonders for those
