Was thinking of launching my kayak at 99 bridge and doing some bass fishing on Choke Canyon out of my yak.

Question is... how many people are leary of alligators on a kayak. I feel more than safe on a boat and have fished around them many times. I always repect the animal and enjoying looking at them while steering clear of their personal territory, but I have to admit I'm a bit squeemish to join them in the water on my yak (closer to the water, slower to retreat if gator is pi$$ed, no motor to scare them, etc.)

Anyone have any personal experiences with gators on a yak? Maybe I'm just searching for a boost of confidence before I lauch.

Hope this doesn't start a debate about the presence of the gators... find them to be fascinating creatures and I realize it is their home.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Don't crowd a momma gator protecting her young/nest and you will never have a problem.
In the history of Texas there have been zero deaths from alligator attacks. And most of the injuries sustained from alligator attacks have come from one of two reasons: professionals lawfully handling alligators in the course of their work and making a mistake and getting hurt, or people jumping off rope swings or high banks of a river and landing on an alligator.

I've fished st. charles bay extensively where you can find both sharks and gators, and I've never even had a close call.
To tell you the truth those trout stealing dolphins make me more nervous than sharks or gators.

The dolphins have learned to grab stringers hanging out of the kayak for an easy meal.

Yeah, the are big, powerful, wild animals, and because of dolphin shows, and tamed dolphins at sea world and what not, alot of people have given wild dolphins fish and conditioned them to think humans=food. They could really put a hurting on ya, and most people don't respect the potential danger they pose like a gator, shark, or even a snake.
Sharks and gators, given the proper respect will leave ya alone when you are in the water with them. Dolphins will come right up to you if they think you have fish on ya. I don't know of anybody getting hurt by one to date but I know an animal that big and that strong is definately capibile of hurting me. Alot of people don't have that respect for them.

Cajuns have been raised around alligators in the swamps using pirogue canoes, so a Kayak isn't a whole lot different.

Keep your distance and don't crowd a gator or do a lot of splashing and you'll be just fine.

Just one more cast!
