Anybody ever keep a supply of shiners at home ? The local bait shops tend to run out during this time of year so I was thinking about setting a holding tank up. Last weekend I had to settle for minnows so big that I could've gone shark fishing with 'em.
I'm thinking of a 50 to 100 gallon tank in the carport. The question is : what's more important - chilling or aeration ?

Aeration will be required both summer and winter. In the hot summer weather refrigeration will be necessary to keep the fish alive. You will also need chemicals to remove the poison that municipal water supplies contain. Sure Life has a complete line here. As a minimum you will need Better Bait. You have no idea what you are letting yourself in for. The tank will have to be cleaned once a week. Under the best of conditions a few minnows will die each night. If the jokers at the local water plant suddenly increase the chlorine or add an unknown chemical you will lose the whole tank. I fought the minnow tanks for five years as the assistant manager of the local marina. It is no picnic.

I've kept fresh and saltwater aquariums for years so I'm familiar with the water chemistry aspect. Think I could keep them without a chiller until ,say ,the middle of April ?
Guess I could set up a tank in the house where it's be easier to do water changes. Do shiners put out as much waste as goldfish ?
Keep in mind this would be a temporary situation. Maybe 6 weeks max.

If you have good aeration and do about 25% water change a week, probably ok 'till mid-April.
Here's a tip for a red neck chiller...drill a hole in the door of one of those small refridge's preferably an older one that still cools. Through that hole run as much flexible small hose/tubing you can get inside the fridge. Hook it up to a small low volume pond pump and circuate the water through the cooler into the pond...presto you have an effective chiller.

If you are only talking the spring you will have no problem with heat. If you get hot days just add ice. Be sure to neutralize the ice.
Good luck with the minnows.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing lately.
