Yeah - we're pretty loose with the rules. Just an informal father/son bonding deal. We decided that if he plays a significant role in landing the fish then we'll count it toward his goal. Nothing official about it, just something fun he wanted to shoot for and I was all for it...

We're also counting spots and small mouth toward the goal (basically anything you could weigh in during a real tourney). He wanted to include sand bass in the deal and I suggested that might make the goal a little too easy, so he was happy to focus on lmbs...

[quote=scott01]Congrats to your son. But, I have to ask. I thought you said it was his goal to catch 100 bass this year. If you hook the bass and he reels it in, is it truly HIS bass? I guess I would have expected any fish on his tally to be hooked and reeled in by himself. [/quote\

For &$%^ sake. A kid keeping a shallow water fish like that on the hook isnt good enough?

Cool deal. Good luck to your son on attaining his goal! I'm a firm believer in setting goals and striving to reach them. It's especially important for kids too so they can get that feel of accomplishment which inevitably makes them strive for higher goals later! I never really thought about keeping a running total for my kids but it's a good idea! I think you got it right, counting sandbass would almost making hitting the 100 mark too easy once you found a school or 2 of them. 100 bass is a much more challenging task. Oh, and thanks for not getting wound up about my little question. I was just curious more than anything so I was inquiring about whatever rules you might have put in place for a fish to count (like species, etc). I guess the others only saw what they wanted to see in my original post and that was apparently looking for negativity, which is not what I was trying to bring to the conversation. If they would read vs over-react maybe they would have noticed my earlier congrats.

Good job herefishyfishy and son! Its a shame that someone on this forum always finds something to whine about or nit pick. Who cares if you casted it out and helped him catch it! The kid is 6, my son still cant cast a baitcaster and he is 17!
