Do you guys use Drop shots effectively? How and where do you throw it? What baits as well.

Any big fish from it?

I've had good success drop shooting zoom finesse worms or roboworms. And yes you can catch surprisingly large bass on them. My PB on a drops shot is 5+.

For a vertical presentation I put the hook between 4-8 inches and basically crappie fish; still fish. It can also work well on bare banks casting it with a longer distance between hook and weight say 12-24". Then I just slowly reel dragging it along the way.

Hope this helps

I caught 19 on the drop shot today. The bass were a little finicky today after the 6 inches of rain!

Do you guys use Drop shots effectively? As effectively as my skills (or lack of) allow.. Over the last 4 years I've learned you can use a drop shot while fishing pretty much any type of cover or structure in our waters.

How I usually opt for a spinning rod.. or fairy wand 6'6 to 7'2 with an extra fast tip, parabolic bend and backbone for pulling them out of cover if you need to. I like 10-12# test on spinning gear, although I know a lot of guys that swear by going lighter to 8,6 and 4lb test... We must be fishing different cover. On windy ways or when I'm fishing it on heavier line, I'll throw it on a baitcaster. It works better for me to use a baitcaster in heavy winds by keeping my rod low while being able to detect bites. I like the round style drop shot weights in open water and pencil style weights in and around cover. 1/8-1oz. My preference is a size 1 and 2 gammy drop shot hook with the hook tip bent out a little bit with pliers to get behind the lip of bigger fish. I was shown and usually prefer to have the bait nose hooked and exposed when at all possible.. Keeping the horizontal action will vary with different baits when nose hooking them, so fill up the bath tub, or scare the fish in your aquarium and see what works best with different baits. A texas rigged 1/0 roundbend hook texas rigged is good around heavy cover, and I know a lot of guys prefer it overall.

and where do you throw it? ANYWHERE. You can catch fish on a drop shot in 6" to the deepest spot on the lake with a drop shot day or night if you're putting it in front of them.. It's very versatile. Pitching and dragging next to visible cover like stumps, brush, docks, concrete, etc is always a good start. It's also a great technique for working along grass walls, rip rap, road beds, pond dams, brushpiles... whatever. Some guys punch grass with a drop shot rig on 65# braid.. the options are endlesss.

What baits as well. Straight tail and finesse worms are what most people go to (as do I) but I've seen pictures of 10#+ fish coming off of a ribbit on a drop shot... so again, don't count anything out. Robo worms, zoom finesse worms, trick worms, flukes, hand pours, etc are all good options.

Any big fish from it? A couple 8lb class fish for me, but I don't count it out for a huge fish on any given day..

I hope this helps cheers

I use the technique all the time. Deep and shallow. Catches all size fish and will catch them when nothing else will.
Normally use 4" zoom finesse worms on it and I always use a baitcaster, not spinning gear. But that's just me and my comfort zone.
Give it a shot. You will enjoy fishing it.

This one was 7.8 caught drop shotting. My PB was taken at Ray Roberts on a D-Shot as well....we've caught em so small they won't register on a scale, all the way to some bigguns recently!

I throw the drop shot year round. It puts fish in the boat when nothing else will. Like Sinkey, I use a bait casting setup and dont believe you need a fairy wand to fish it effectively. I simply cast it out to likely spots and slowly drag it with a few twitches in between. If I need a more vertical presentation I peel and feed line.

I use the Owner Rig'N Hook exclusively and will be the product tester on the above pictured hook. They are in the mail and I can hardly wait. I think Carlos is on to something with his creation and in my opinion will be a game changer. Just another drop in the bucket to add with his revolutionary Tungsten Flipping weights.

This is true....but Evan is no slouch either...thanks for the good info, fellas...

2 more questions: when drop-shotting with a baitcaster, what #-test usually?

And has anyone used a creature-type bait on this set up?

You can Dropshot any plastic but ones with subtle action or natural movement seem to work best for me....I usually match my line to what hook I am using and my bait determines my hook and weight size. For the most part I primarily use 15 lb Big Game or Seaguar paired with a 1/0 Owner Rig'N hook and a 3/16 oz weight. That's as light as I will go. I know of people that use 5/0 hooks and 1 oz weights for dropshotting on Falcon. There are no limits to this presentation....use your imagination and baits/products you have confidence in and it will pay off.
