Fished CBSP afternoon of Friday, March 16. As we drove in to Bend I was disappointed to see a muddy river. Arrrived at the park at 2:30 or so. My brother and I walked to the primitive camping area to flyfish and tried for a half hour or so without any luck. Walked back to the truck and wadefished the area between the check in station and boat ramp until almost dark.

I had switched to ultralight spinning gear and ended up catching and releasing a limit on jigs. Chartreuse produced, as did white. I caught them in the slower water along the opposite bank. C&Red two crappie as well. About an hour before dark the white bass really turned on. My brother stuck with flyfishing, using a beadhead Clouser, and finished the day with six.

It was kind of slow overall, despite catching 25. All were males.

Plenty of water, albeit visibility was six to eight inches. Which makes wading the river an adventure. Six hours on the road to fish for about 4 hours, but it was worth it.

We heard another fisherman say they slayed the crappie the night before on minnows down toward the boat launch.

The lady at the check in station predicted that the water would begin to clear on Sunday but forecasted rain for Monday would muddy it up again.

Saw a stringer with what I am pretty sure was 2 females, and a handful of males on Saturday. I bet this is the week it goes off.

Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

Man, I sure hope that rain keeps going well north of the river.

We'll be down there fishing Wed - Fri this week.

I sure would hate to arrive to a chocolate looking, high, rapid flowing river!! bang

Since fishing is a sport, I guess that makes us athletes...

with muddy water, live bait is always best. spinners and jigs would have to pretty much hit them in the head for them to notice them.

I hit the bend twice this year, both times chocolate with debris in the water from the recent runoff. Grey rooster tail did best for me followed by chartruese roadrunner. Looks like the river is going to catch some more runoff tonight. There were lots of shad in the river, so a cast night might produce some for bait. Put them in a container without corners such as a 5 gallon bucket and they will live a while as long as you keep the numbers in the bucket down. I did not fish at night, but it seems the night fisherman did the best on total numbers.

Curiosity got the best of me and I went out and checked my gauge here in Goldthwaite at 10:50pm. Only .8 so far but stilling sprinkling and thunder. Most of the big stuff has moved to the east. For you folks wanting to stay on top of the CBSP rainfall this site is kind of interesting.

Well I spoke to soon. Another round came through during the night and dropped more rain. Gauge here is showing 2.4 this morning. grin
