I have a 96 150 evinrude and when I put it in reverse sometimes it works other time it makes a horrible noise. What causes this??

Getting some wear. Try adjusting the shift cable toward reverse.

Put it in reverse and then disconnect the shift cable and move the shift lever in the direction that it was going and see how far it moves. adjust your cable to reach the lever
