Are you guys using painted or unpainted jigs with your tube baits? Does it make any difference.

It doesn't really make a difference. I catch them with unpainted and with painted.

If your trying to catch other fisherman go painted if you want to catch fish then use both.

For me the jury is still out on "does it or doesn't it" make a difference but I will say that I'm starting to lean towards painted and here's why...at the most recent Crappie Anglers of Texas meeting, one of the guest speakers was Kevin Rogers who has won big time crappie tournaments that number well into the teens...his advise when asked that very question was (and I'm paraphrasing) "Painted...always painted and the head is never the same color as any of the colors of the jig body and here's why....fish have to see it to eat it and it gives them ONE MORE COLOR that may be highly visible to them...so why not?" That rationalle made a lot of sense to me....maybe it's the hot pink head that grabs there attention and the black and chartreuse that seals the deal as they approach it? Maybe a white head was the only thing visible in a mis-made color selection of body for the given water/light conditions? Who knows...but the advise made sense so I have been making an effort to use only painted if "it doesn't make a difference anyways"...however...I don't fret if I only have plain lead on me...because it doesn't make a difference anyways...right!? thumb

Oh and P.S. just before I got this advise...a buddy fishing 3 feet from me...using the EXACT same body, depth, weight...out fished me 2-1 with his painted jig head...I made the change and the numbers balanced out the rest of the day on that somewhat muddy creek...true story...

If the water is muddy, I go with a pink jig head. Besides that, unpainted all the way.

I've fished with most of the guides on CCL and can't recall any of them ever using a painted jig head. Not saying that if they did they'd catch even more fish! Seeing what Lane did last Thursday, they should outlaw guides and their customers even having a barb on their jigs....so unfair to us guys that can't buy a crappie most days!!!!! (that's supposed to be funny)

If you think it makes a difference then it does, I think it does. Experiment and make your own mind. If your really on the fish, prolly doesn't matter. If your not or the bite is tough, or perhaps a frontal condition......that's when I said painted. And they sure wont eat it any less".......I need all the help I can get

IMOHO it doesn't make a difference. But then again I have a Crappie Nibble on the hook as well.

Painted in stained to muddy water. Unpainted in stained to clear water. Sunny or cloudy is also part of the equation; as is cover density.

I don't think it matters 98% of the time. I use painted jigheads because I use the cheap ones Academy sale. I believe unpainted ones would work just as well.
