So ive noticed that shimano vs abu garcia is pretty similar to chevy vs ford with the curado being the infamous 350 chevy. Ive also noticed that when it comes to older low profile reels, shimanos seem to be the ones people seek. I always see people looking for the cu-200. Why arent there any abu garcias out there being sold or looked for? I dont think Ive ever seen a wanted ad for a low profile abu garcia thats not a revo. Do they just not last long? I know the big abu garcia reel are bulletproof but im wondering about the reels abu garcia made when shimano bantams first hit or the lews.

The Shimano 200's and 100's are indeed tanks. The Curado 100 D's are tanks too!
The ONLY problem with all of them, is finding spare spools. They can develop cracks in the brake drum and the brake pins wallow out and will wreak havoc on the brass case.
Other than that, they are virtually indestructable!

Why arent there any abu garcias out there being sold or looked for? Do they just not last long? Because they are STILL BEING USED!!!5500 Abu = Lifetime reels! I still have a few lying around that get used in the Salt and Catfishing. Shimanos are Grand also...With those 2, you can't go wrong.

The original Garcia 2500C is a classic. Great light line reel from yesteryear.

The reason you dont see very many used garcia is simple. For many year all of the abu garcias had a life time warentee. Just send them in to Sw reel for a service and the will lube them fo a set price and the rest is fixed for free. I have old square side 5000 and 5500 that are over 40 year old. I use them for cat fishing and the work great. I like Japaneze made shiminos Curado 200b are great reels. The only problem is once they get so old Shimano quits makeing parts. I can still get parts for a 40 year old 5000.

I have several old Garcias. One is an old 5000 made in the 1950s. It still works just fine. I have two monstrous hunks of metal from the mid 1970s that work as well now as they did when they were made. I don't know the model number, but they have enough metal in them to make a small airplane and a black sticker that says "High Speed" just above the handle.
They aren't as quiet as my newest reels, but they are indestructible.

I don't think Abu really made low-profile reels back then. I've got tons of the old round ones.

Abu only in the past 5 years or do started to include low profile reels. Them greenies were well made.
