There are so many different opinions on this subject you may be more confused by the end of this thread than you was when you started it. If you are planning to use your trot line in a lake I'm afraid I can't help you. I build mine for the river and I'm certain they should be different. If you plan on using in the river...pm me, I can help you. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum....

Brands can be anything from Mustad to Owner, gamakatsu to Eagle Claw. The most important thing you should look at is type of hook. I'd suggest you use circle hooks. Try various sizes to see what suits you best. I know guys that use 5/0 gamas and others that use 12/0 mustads.

I used to use Mustad 6/0 and 7/0 O'Shaughnessy stainless steel hooks when I was after Ops. I would sharpen them first.

What to use for trotline hooks will get you varied answers. I try to use a variety of different brands & sizes & types. Could be Eagle Claw, Mustad, Tru-Turn, Owner, and such. I may use the Eagle Claw SS J style O'Shaunessy 5/0 up to 9/0, Mustad 6/0 SS J style or Mustad Stump 3X strength SS short J style 7/0 or 9/0, Owner 11/0 circle Black Chrome, Tru-Turn Perma-Steel 6/0 to 9/0, and Eagle Claw Razor Sharp Circle Hooks 5/0 to 7/0.
I have found each hook is unique. I have even caught two Ops (25+ & 40#ers) on a Tru-Turn 6/0 or 7/0 to which the cam caused it to go in a downwards motion into their gills & get lodged. Due to that manner, they would never get off, such as ripping thru their lip or side of lip.

Circle all the way, brand don't matter as much as gap. You need a wide gap circle. Circle are better for the fish, if you fill up the line and are releasing some. You may miss a few with em but the ones that you hook will be hooked in the corner of the mouth and healthy.

On set lines I fish the 12/0 mustad circle hooks you buy in a box of 25 at academy. They are cheap and get the job done for me.
