Also don't count Jardelle and Birch creek out this late in the season.

I appreciate the advice Raiderluvjen. I'm not familiar with Birch and Jardelle creeks. Come to think of it... I'm not that familiar with Nails and Cedar either but have fished them once or twice. Newman Bottom is where I usually go. But, Its 90 miles one way for me. If FishyTX gets on them soon, that will be the sign I'm waiting for. I'll have to weigh my options til then.

tight lines all!

Shut up and fish!

TPWD closed Newman's Bottom today because of all the rain on that roadway, should be back open in a few day's. This run should be really good again after the runoff water clears up some. We also might get a full lake out of this rain, sweet.

I agree with the above posters all the creeks should have bass and crappie in them after this.

All the rain (flooding) is good for the lake, creeks and fish. It greatly enhances the fishing and the success of the spawning.. and the timing could not be better.. 235.83 as of 2:18 pm 11mar2012

With all the rain we have received over the last few days Lake Somerville will likely be at pool level by this coming Thursday making another paddle trip up the Yegua much easier. I expect to paddle across the lake and not drag the yak halfway there but the Yegua will be up and runnin' muddy making the fishing tougher.

Before this recent rain the lower end of the Yegua was full of fish that few fishermen ever see because it is a very long walk from either park or Newmans Bottom and the lake wasn't high enough for any boat traffic to pass through the mouth of the creek. So the last time dragging the yaks over half the lake to get into the Yegua we ended up having about six miles of the lower end all to ourselves.

When the lake is at pool level it is possible for flat bottom or other shallow running motor boats to get into the Yegua and I expect that by the weekend many will try and some will succeed. If we go Thursday we will beat the weekenders to the fresh fish and maybe, just maybe catch a few.

I'd like to leave the boat ramp at Nails Creek park about 9am Thursday morning March 15,2012 and this time all are welcome not just tough guys! It takes a day or two for all the water way upstream to get to the lake but I'm hoping the lake will rise and push back up into the creek making the paddling even easier. We do have to be careful when dealing with flood water so if the Yegua looks too dangerous we can always head up into Nails creek.

Just checked the lake level.. 237.09 @ 9 am Monday... up more then a foot in 24 hours.. going above pool level has it's benefits too! wink Birch, Jerdelle and all the other little feeder creeks will have fish too! Crappie like the smaller creeks as well as the Yegua maybe even better! This is turning out to be a very good year on Lake Somerville and will go a long ways toward making it through another hot summer.. smile

I'll be with you this time since I won't have to work Thursday and Friday. Friday I might try birch again but we'll see how the Yegua is Thursday!

Just got a report from my nephews that the carp and gar have moved up the flooded creeks by the zillions along with whitebass and crappie. Cast netting for bait in the ditches along Flag pond rd / CR 125 they caught carp and not bait.. last time it flooded lots of carp got trapped out in the woods and the buzzards had a feast on the stinky mess! Looks like it might happen again wink

There were lots of carp/buffalo out in a field about 1/4 mile from the parking lot at Newmans. I stopped and walked out into the middle of the field and counted over 40 of them. I even found one that was still alive and kicking, in a small puddle of water, and his eyes has been pecked out by the birds.

This was during that first week when the fishing was first getting hot.

This past Saturday I lost three carps and finally got one on one single place bellow Newmans Bottom. My fishing line is 8 lbs test line and the carp landed is 14 lbs.

I did not intend to fish for carp/buffalo. but they hit more frequently than white bass. It was fun to fight with them..with 8 lbs line..

I can't believe I'm stuck at home today. I'll be on the creeks tomorrow though. I washed the dog and I am about to mow the lawn, so I wont have any honey does come tomorrow. Dr. apt on Wednesday, but have the rest of the week to load up on some whites. Let the rod bend and the drag sing. And with all these creeks and rivers flowing good, I'm not real sure where I should start at first. Might hit the steps later on today........
