Let it sink, slow steady retrieve, stop it, then slow and steady. Repeat until you get it back to the boat.

Does it only work around rock? Or could I use on a silty/grassy bottom?

Use a heavier head, 1/4 to 1/2 oz. What type of line and rod are you using? Need a sensitive rod and braid or fluoro will help you feel the bait and bites better. It will work on any bottom but rocks or lay downs seem to attrack more fish and therefore more bites. You will get a lot of hang ups if around grass, so I don't use it there.

i fish it like a jig or soft plastic but have also caught several by chunking it out an letting it sink thne slowly reel it back to the boat just above the bottom ...they willl crush it so be careful and keep a good grip on your rod

After reading this thread and watching the video, I'm curious. Is this technique or does this technique substitute for the c-rig ? I just can't add another rod to the boat.

I don't use the biffle hardhead, however, I do fish a texas rig using a football shaped sinker pegged. I have found it to be very versatile. You can slowly clawl it through rocks, fish is super slow and shakey head it some. You can flip it, fish it deep and shallow. I usually use a 1/4 ounce and slowly crawl it through rocks with a small craw on a 2/0 ewg worm hook. When it gets really windy or I want to move the bait faster I go to a 3/8 ounce.

I find the technique to be a cross of cranking and a c-rig....I use a 7' MH rod with a fast tip and the key is to have the hard head just off the bottom with it making contact every once in a while.
