The family is going down there next weekend and we plan to fish Canyon. We don't know what to expect..safe to run? Water clarity? Good cover? Does it fish docks/boathouses or deeper...just looking for some pointers not spots or anything. Fish should be moving up this time of year so thats about all we have to go by. Thanks in advance!

Getting kinda dangerous, lot's of trees at, barely above, and below the water line. If you have a GPS graph follow the river channels on the main lake. There are a few low water spots that'd surprise you. Just pay attention. If you go upriver do it at a idle speed.
Forgot: Water clarity, couple feet (fairly clear). No boat docks on lake. Not much cover and NO grass at all.

It's not Falcon or Fork thats for sure but you are timing it pretty good. The lakes never been known for good fishing, it's more a rec. lake. Just becareful running at high speed and if the water looks a different color ahead, theres a reason why...Shallow, and it's all rock so it won't be pretty. I think there was a post in the fishing report section a few days ago.

Grout-scout is the man on canyon. I think he has the lake record out there. Largemouth and smallmouth. Caught on bama rig on same cast!

I've decided to sell all my rods, reels and $2,000 dollars worth of lures. Instead I'm just going to drive my boat around, take cool di/si pics and hope to see the bikinis.

Canyon Lake has always been tough for me. I live about 20 min from the lake and the last time I fished any on it was about 3 years ago.
I use to catch a few bass on white spinner baits (3/8 oz) with willow leaf blades. Baby brush hogs work as well. I tend to downsize my tackle and baits when I fish Canyon. Got some small mouth out of there on light tackle that were a lot of fun.

I've lived and fished on Canyon for almost 40 years. Used to fish it at least once to twice a week, doing that much fishing on it paid off in some very good days. When there was water in it and willow trees on the banks I would build some willow brush piles any any fish in the area would be on them the very next day, hard work but with big rewards. I gave up working that hard to catch fish and now travel to other lakes. Still fish Canyon from time to time. Late March into April are the best for a big bite. My best areas were mid lake creeks. Small baits and light line improves catch ratio. Tube baits and baby brush hogs in the timber and bushes, pumpkin seed, watermelon and blue flake are good colors. Rattle traps and crank baits in natural colors have their days too. As others have said, if you don't know the lake there are some dangerous spots just under the surface and with a rocky bottom it's not forgiving. Good luck...
