22 inch male with a bloody tail...I dunno??

I've caught males bigger than that on Fork, Jerry. And remember, the males build the nest, hence bloody tails.

Generally a dead giveaway that the fish is a female...

Males do build nests, but very rarely in nature produce eggs. When I handled the fish some eggs came out. Next time I will take a DNA sample to send to a lab to verify the true gender. I was just trying to share a fish pic and story, not get made to look like a dumba## or a liar.

Nice Fish....The spawn has not even come close to being on yet...But with this crazy warm winter, they probably have started earlier than normal...just a guess!

Easy Serene One I don't think anyone on here would mean to do harm to you this is a forum they were just giving opinions. Serene we all learn a great deal from this forum by having different opinions

That is still a nice fish either way

Good Luck

No one tried to make you out to be a liar nor a dumba## and thanks for sharing your story and photo. If eggs came out of the fish, she is a female.

There is such a large range for when fish decide to spawn that it is absolutely possible that a fish could already be spawned out. If it still has some eggs coming out, then it probably spawned out very very recently to being caught. Not all fish spawn on the day of a full moon; however, a concentrated wave seems to occur around this event. Biological advantages for an early "spawner" could be directly related to competition for resources (like territory), just as an example. Keep in mind, fish spawn only when they feel that their offspring will have the greatest chance of survival.

Nice fish!
