My grandfather got me started, Dad helped when he could but more than anything just time on the water. If you want to get better at something, do it every chance you get. I don't care if it's tournaments or fishing ponds; fish every chance you get. Even if you aren't thinking about it, you're learning. It's the Malcom Gladwell 10,000 hour rule. Anything you do for 10,000 hours, you'll be amongst the best at it. Class room time, reading, watching videos - they help - but none of that can compare to actually being on the water and fishing. There's a crazy learning curve involved where at first you're terrible and think you'll always be terrible, then pretty quickly you pick things up but from there it's levels off and you have to fight that slow, up hill climb of picking up little things here and there that no one can teach you - you just figure it out and you know it. It becomes less about hard and fast rules and more about instinct.

My dad taught me the basics and rest I had to learn on my own like soft plastic fishing but I just watched my dad how he fished it and I started to mimic what he was doing I was about 13 around that time, and I wouldn't be on this forum talking about fishing if it wasn't for him to teach me these techniques I use in tournaments now.

I'm with you. I've been fishing for about a year. I've got a lot to learn, seems like you can read all you want but you have to go out and put the time in to actually get better. I'd like to get to the point where I can catch fish on every trip out, but I'm far far from that at this point.

I didn't grow up near any water, so I have had to learn from friends, internet, tv and most importantly here. I recently joined up with a bass club also, learning lots there. Especially how to get my butt kicked! smile

I learned a lot from this guy when we fished together while I was in college.

And my buddy Ron, (BigLeslie on the forum).

I learned a ton from fishing as a non-boater in the federation.

Dad taught me the basics...then when i turned 16 my license played a huge part in the art of self-teaching as i'd go to local ponds everyday after school and fish. My junior year i even signed on a co-op program where i was suppose to go to school for half a day and work the rest. Well...i made it through the entire year with no job and got to fish everyday LOL.

My Grandad on my moms side taught my dad and he taught me and my brother how to fish and hunt. Me and my dad spent a lot of long days on the water. I am surprised that it didn't make me hate fishing because it didn't matter if they were biting or not we were staying till dark. I wish they were still around to go with me but we laid my dad to rest last year and my grand dad back in 73. My wife and I are expecting and I hope I can pass the skills that I have learned over the past 40 plus years of fishing to my kids.
