Anyone ever fish on the San Marcos River around Staples Dam via a kayak? Was thinking about going out there this week and was trying to find out what the fishing was like this time of year. Are the fish shallow or deep? Have they already spawned? Any tips or advice would be awesome.

Since the water maintains a pretty constant temperature, I would imagine that the spawn is very different from other Texas rivers. Good question. I've spent quite a bit of time on that river myself, and soft plastic crawfish and small poppers always seemed to produce really well for me. I searched around and found this, seems like some pretty good information.

Both the put-in and take-outs were on private property. The guy my brother was renting from owned or had access to three spots. We put-in somewhere below the Martindale dam, were staying at a place on the river between Martindale and Staples.Larger fish have been falling for big rabbit strip leaches fished subsurface off points and structure.
