As some of you may (or not) know, I run a Youth fishing circuit in conjunction with my regular Ignition Bass Divisions. http://yfl.ignitionbass.com/I and am trying to plan a group outing for all the kids and families for a summer trip (July or Aug) while school is out. I know it's HOT in South Texas in Summer, but which lake (Falcon or Amistad) is best in Summer Time? I would like them to have a good experience in spite of the heat. I'm thinking a 3-4 day trip. Practice a couple days and have a 2 day tournament. I have never been on either in Summer, so I need some expert help. Thanks in advance.

I've never fished Amistad, but it's pretty easy to find fish on Falcon in the summer

Why do people keep asking this question? Falcon is the best lake in the country right now. Amistad is a good lake, but nowhere close to Falcon. The decision is a no-brainer...

Personally I think you have a better chance of catching a biggun at Falcon. But I enjoy the experience of Amistad much more. if the fishing is slow I'll just tie off the tube and drag people around or I'll go look for new spots on the lake. Either way look at the reports and just play it by ear.
Either place can put some numbers in the boat.

It depends on what you want to do with the kids. Here is my take on working with the kids all my life and taking them fishing. They enjoy the other good things in life like swimming and camping. If you take them to Falcon; check out the state park facilities for cabins, although it will be hot. Only other choice is motels in Zapata. If you take them to Amistad; check out the American Campground's cabins. Cabins are simple but with air. Everyone brings bed rolls. They have a pool to keep them intertained, fire pits for cookouts and close to town. I am assuming there will be an adult or parent with each child which will alter your decision making.

I'd also like to mention... In July and August down there it is REALLY hot. I think I'm in pretty good physical condition, and I'm pretty sure I was on the verge of heat stroke every day while I was down there last June.
Those kids probably shouldn't be in that heat for more than a few hours at a time

This ^^^
Fishing is better at Falcon. Amistad has better scenery and crystal clear water for swimming.

It doesnt start getting brutally hot until 2 or 3 in the afternoon......be careful. I would choose Falcon.....being that I guide here. lol. Also if you let me know on dates as soon as you decide, I will help any way I can with locations, patterns and the use of my boats. Like seeing kids get involved in this wonderful sport, my lil girls love the water.

I'm sorry, I guess I missed the other posts that asked..."but which lake (Falcon or Amistad) is best in Summer Time?" Yes Falcon is probably the best lake in the country RIGHT NOW, but how 'bout July or August? Hot yes....kids would bee off water (for tournament) around 12:30. Parents will be with them so if they go back out it's on them. Also have to consider accomodations for group of around 40 - 50 people. And I know for a fact there is not much to do in Zapata vs. Del RIo. (Food, shopping, etc)

I have a place on amistad and have been to falcon. For kids and youth go with amistad. There are a number of atractions that can keep them entained when not on the water.

Kids would enjoy Amistad much more I think. I love fishing falcon and wish I could be there now but for kids Amistad would be better because the scenery and swimming. We have been going there for years and the cliff diving, cave paintings, ect... seem to hold the kids attention longer than the fishing alone.
