.

I used my iPhone with Navionics App out on the water recently on
a misty day and it got me to thinking about water proof cases.
Today I decided to vacuum seal my iPhone in a food grade bag
just to see if it would still work. It does. I can even make phone
calls. My wife could hear me pretty well, and I could here her OK
as long as there was no background noise. Not good, but I could
hear her. But I rarely use my iPhone for talking. I use it mainly
for texting, camera, and it's computer functions like this marvelous
Navionics App.

Anyway, I thought I would pass this on.

i did not do this yesterday whne i went out with Tom but i do similar for my android...except i use a ziplock bag and only take the phone out if i need to place a call or take a picture, i leave air in the bag...not a lot, but enough to allow me to still text and what not if needed and also and most importantly keep it afloat if it happens to fall into the water, but if i am out fishing i rarly use it as i am fishing. i use the ziploks with the Zipper style not the press and pray style.

in your sloution, which is cool, i would put a bobber on it or dummy cord it to something seeing how you have plenty of plastic around it...i would do that but i dont have a food saver vacuum thing...awesome none the less...

I have an Otter Defender Case for my iPhone 4.
Ive dropped in puddles of water, pavement from a 3' drop and still looks new out of the case.

Vacuum sealed back is a pretty good idea.
But I would rig up something to tie it to, in case it would slip out of your hand and off the boat into 30 ft of water.

I would be concerned about it over heating. I would think the heat would need to escape from the electronics. I have an Otter Box for mine. I don't think it's water proof but, is water resistant. I have a Griffin case for my Ipad that is mil-spec and will withstand a major rain down pour according to the manual. I haven't tried it and don't intend to.

Just put it in the bag and use a Bluetooth to talk on.

I have an otterbox, last year on fork I dropped mine in 12' of water. Without thinking I jumped in after it the first week in march (50 degree water.)Luckily I came up with it. It got water in it but after a few days in a bag of rice and it was ok. The other day my wife got me a lifeproof case. It can be used to take underwater video and pictures. It's also alot smaller than my otterbox. If your worried about getting your phone wet it's definitely the way to go.

I can put my iPhone in a vac bag just when I go fishing and
it will cost me right at 4 cents every time I do it. It's
100% waterproof, does not increase the size of the
phone one bit, and the phone functions perfectly in the bag.
The phone does not overheat in the bag. It doesn't
float but I don't hold it over water. I just use the
phone sitting in the boat and stick it back in my
pocket when not using it.

because of my love for technology, you might still want to take the "it will never happen to me" syndrome out of the equation and modify it with a bobber tied to it just poke a small hole in the extra flap of plastic or what ever...or at least a bit of string with a small caribiner attached so it can attach to your belt loop...i'm just saying better safe then sorry as i found out the hard way because it was never going to happen to me.

but hey not forcing anything on any one...

besser, sicher und glcklich als traurig zu sein und kein Telefon

(excuse my spell translation i am rusty.)

Did you have to pay for the app? If so, what did it cost and where did you get it from? Looks cool...

If you have an iPhone4 or 4S it's the best $9.99 you will ever spend. Once
you have the app, you can download for FREE any lake that Navionics has on file
in the U.S. Functionally, it's a very potent app and as handy as your iPhone.

Go to this link and click the AppStore icon under Navionics Mobile for iPhone

http://www.navionics.com/NavionicsMobile.asp

Then when it boots to iTunes, choose Navionics Marine & Lakes USA

If you got it to install, I would reboot your phone and then try launching it again.

If it still won't launch, delete it and install it again.

If it still won't run, it's time to go to the Genius Bar. You've
got a problem.
