Don't think it is golden algae, it's been to warm.

Dubee I wish you were right, but the water temps are not too warm for it. Dead fish started showing up last Friday, I hoped that the recent rain would help. I guess now the only thing to do is hope its not as bad as in the past. It was nice getting used to good fishing on Whitney again.

Hate to hear that. It looked like Whitney was just recovering from the last one.

Does the algae deplete the O2 in the water or does it release a toxin?

It's running course on the Brazos chain again. Haven't heard anything about Granbury, but PK is getting it bad again too.

It does a little bit of both. The oxygen levels do not drop too much, it's mainly the toxins that cause the kills.

We fished yesterday near Cedron Creek and Bee Cove. We did not see any dead fish. We did see some gar lounging near the surface. Lots of birds, but none feeding. No buzzards feeding on any fish either.

I thought all the fresh water was supposed to dilute the golden algae and add oxygen. Maybe we will get some more rain come the first of the week and it will help.

As the only thing we saw while fishing Friday around Juniper Cove was dead minnows,an shad,it might not be that bad this year.We did not see but 1 dead catfish. The owner of the marina told me that someone from the fish an game came by Thursday an told him,it is because the water temps keep changing an when it is just right { around 56 } that the algie releases blooms that float to the top of the water. That is when the fish will move out to deep water. They must be right because we trolled all over in the coves, and not one fish on the fish finder. As soon as we got out in deep water they were every were.Thank goodness that smart fish like crappie an black bass will move to deep water. The last kill took mostly strippers,an trash fish.

Lake Whitney: TPWD received word today of dead and dying shad at Juniper Cove Marina. Game wardens are responding to the report. An update will be posted as new information is received.

Its always here and we get a dose of the "bloom" annually. It all just depends on the severity of it. I, personally, think its too late past the cold season for it to really bloom to cause alot of damage because it thrives in cold water.

I ran way up North from about midlake and didn't see a dead fish Sunday. I wish all those pelicans would go away, they remind me of the last big fish kill we had.

Ain't that the truth... man! We were fishing a point yesterday where some had been resting but left when we came up.. The Boss said "There is something dead here"... I said "There are no buzzards though"... Then we figured it out... man what a mess!

There were a few dead and dying shad around mid-lake yesterday but the gulls were doing a good job of picking them up.

I hope the water warmed enough to keep it from getting bad this year. Two weeks ago the south banks up the river were covered in dead gar, and some of the pockets along the river smelled like death. We saw dead shad in Big Rocky and King Creek that weekend too.
