I'm new to this section of the forum and have a question about bowfin. I live in north Texas (right around Sherman) and was wondering if there are any good bowfin spots up here. Also, what kind of tackle would you recommend for catching bowfins? They look like an awesome fish to catch!!

Your about 4 months early for the fins also you may have to drive south and east to find them in populations you could target

Not too many areas around North Texas but East texas has a good population. I caught several at Lake O The Pines last summer. I used cut bluegill and a few live ones. It seems to work the best for me but they are mean fish and will take any bass lure you throw at em!

Thanks guys! I've got family in East Texas, so I may have to check a few lakes out when I'm down that way.

Cut bait or trick worms worked slow in really shallow water.

They seem to be getting alot of attention in the fishing universe. Caught one at Lake o the Pines last summer and it was a blast. Bout time they start getting the recog they deserve.

I really wish it was possible to catch more of em! They outfight bass by far. One of the most distinct bites too...feels like a pit bull is on the end of your line!

Used to catch a ton of them when I was living in the Carolinas. They are a blast to fight, will bite when nothing else will, and can get pretty dang big. Large live bait seemed the best back then. Even heard tell of people that would eat the ugly things.

I too heard of people that ate them. I'd feel guilty to take something so hardcore tho haha. I used a six inch bluegill at lake of the pines and got one that pushed eight. Was fishing for bass but got bored and went to them lol.
