I was throwing a frog last friday and catching fish. This was right before that little front had pushed through, and it was on a private pond.

small bodies that warm up quicker should be good with top water on warmer days, or during warming trends. I havent tried any on a lake yet this year.

I caught a 4# on a frog on T-Bend when the water was 52 deg. I was throwing up in the bushes. I dont think that is the norm though. I usually wait till end of April personally till i break out the topwaters. Frogs ill bring out in March.

I'll just say this, if they're shallow, in the right water, they'll bite a topwater. what topwater, what retrieve, what size, etc... that's the trick.

Low to mid 50s isn't too cold.

I learned a few years ago on a nice January day that it is never too early for a topwater. After acouple of warms days, I pulled into a cove where it felt like I was about to start cooking if I did not take off some layers...out of the wind, protected pocket, with the sun beating down. I started with a rattlin chug bug chrome and blue. I would throw it out and pop it about every 10 seconds or so. Nothing real crazy but maybe move it 6 inches or so, then sit. .... Then explosion!!! Fish completely out of the water like the Great White attacks on a seal. Crazy acrobatics.... I caught about 6, 5+ pound footballs that afternoon in one cove. My buddy thought it was fluke until on about the 3rd fish I said are you going to get in on this? If I recall he caught 2. Good times. Lake Fork.

My Dad used to say that when the Dogwoods bloom and the leaves get the size of a mouse's ear that it's top water time.In all my years it has proven pretty true. Used to know an old man that would throw a black chugger spook w/ice on his guides.Guess what he caught fish! powdr

My Club had a tournament in January about 2 years ago. Air temp in the morning mid 40's afternoon mid 60's. Water temps ranged from 48-52. The top 2 places were over 20 lbs and all the fish they weighed came on buzzbaits. That is the truth because I got third and after witnessing 2 of the buzzbait cathches, I switched and caught 3 of my keepers on a buzzbait.

Early in the year with water temps still cool, don't expect a ton of bites, but you can definitely some catch some good ones.

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Caught a few on Henry last year on a buzzbait when the water temp was around 53. Other than that I normally wont pull one out unless the water gets to 60.

For about a month I've been throwing a buzzbait several casts every time I stop at a new location. Temps have been 50-54. I've had one swirl but no other action. I've seen video of a pro catching bass on a buzzbait in 45 deg. water, but I never have much action until 65+ deg. water.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I always start throwing the topwater once the bass are in post spawn. Once those big females come off the bed the will try to kill a topwater bait.
