.

I've decided to give jug lining a try. I'm going to
to use live perch for bait.

I've got some lead shot and was thinking about making
some weights. What is the proper amount of weight
for this application ? I will set the jug to were the weight
is on the bottom and the hooks are above the weight on the
line.

thanks ! Chris

I use a brick. So I guess that's about a pound.

Find yourself some 1 lb dumbell weights. They are cheap and work well.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

House brick. Bout 4 pounds. If they hang up its no loss and you're not leaving lead in the lake.

+1 on 5 to 10 lbs, those jugs you never find using 1 pound weights, you can bet were big fish. And more than likely will be dead big fish.

There are many guys who don't recover their jugs because of not enough weight. You want to make sure that you can find them again so use more weight than you think you need.

We always used dog food or vegetable cans filled with cement and a link of chain hanging out the top. Anywhere from 3-5 lbs, works well.

No matter what I use for the weight, I always use a swivel to put the weight on a lighter line than the main line. I primarly fish Lake Travis and 9 out of 10 times when my jugs get hung up, the weight has slipped between/under some rocks. Saves me a lot time and equipment when I have to break off because it is hung.

I like 18 ounce cups with concrete cast in them and a length of chain a foot long cast into it. Your jug needs to be big enough that it is not pulled under by the weight.

exactly, if a big fish pulls it in deep water, the jug needs to hold the weight up.

When I make a new jug line. I always put on the max weight that the jug will hold and not go under if dragged to deeper water. I test them in a friends swimming pool. The more weight you put on the jug, the better chance your jug is near the spot you put it. Always do something to make it easy to tear away if it gets hung up.

Good point ! If they drag it deeper and your jug won't float the weight,
that rig and fish are lost. That pretty much answers my question. Thanks !
