I've been reading this forum for a while and just decided to join up and post.. We went out to lake whitney yesterday and couldn't even catch a buzz!!! I couldn't locate any live bait so we used mostly slabs, striper jigs, and some bombers by the end of the day in hopes of catching a sandie or anything! We fished from 6AM till about 5PM and I was over it. However, the wardens were real friendly as we were putting the boat on the trailer and told us nobody caught a damn thing that day from what they had heard.. Been going to that lake since I was a kid with mixed results.. I could have caught a stringer full of bass boats as their were about 200 out there yesterday.. lol
Everyone in these posts always act like catching fish is a giant mystery or refer you to a guide service. I'm all about a guide, if it wasn't' for having my own boat and usually fishing is a family thing for us. Of all the years I've been going to that lake, 5 years old in 1980, I'd like to go out there one time and it not cost me $50 in hellbenders and leave feeling "skunked"...
Anyone up for discussing their wins and loses at lake whitney.. I'd love to pick up a pointer or two to use in march and april.. I actually want to use some of my vacation time in April to go camp out there for a week and try my "luck" some more..

I doubt the fishing will be very good at Whitney until all the new water settles out. Give it a couple of weeks and it should get a lot better.

I might would pay a guide to take me striper fishing and chalk it up to paying for the education.. What does a day trip typically cost ballpark and anyone have suggestions on a striper guide?
I have always had luck with other species and other bodies of water.. Have even nailed stripers in salt water.. But whitney ALWAYS kicks my a$$... lol Ready to change my "luck" even if I have to pay for it..

This time of year, with the temps and the fresh water most of the sandies and stripers are heading up the river or the creeks. The fresh water really makes them run. Both species prefer to spawn in current, and right now they have planty of it so they are heading up to get it on. We realy need this. With the low water teh last few years there they have not had a good spawn in a while.

We post a report every time we go to Whitney, good and bad... the winter has been tough on us as well, though Sunday we did catch two nice stripers.... by accident as we were fishing for black bass... The Bud Light Trail Tournament was on Whitney Sunday which is what generated a lot of the boats.. Anyway, you can check out my Whitney Lake Online blog at Whitney Lake Online We typically fish one or twice a week. Maybe you will find a clue or two or at least find some water to eliminate. Good luck!

Hey Mack, sorry to hear Whitney got the best that day. Whitney as any lake can be tough some days. This time of year with fronts coming in every 3 days can make it a roller coaster ride at times. I went out Friday in between rains and caught fish relatively shallow in 12 to 18' of water on swim baits and the A Rig from www.BrassnBlades.com The Stripers are fat and females full of eggs and males full and spurting there stuff all over the boat. In a nut shell there fixing to go shallow any day now and when they do it is awesome. No where to go but around the boat. If you interested in a trip I have a family discount where one child 12 or under goes for free with a paying adult. Do a search on here for some of my posts for tips on whitney or check me out on my web below, I have some patterns on my news link that may help, think there still there anyway.

No prob my # is 817-822-5539 give me a shout. Yes I guide on Whitney and have since 1997. The Stripers I am catching seem to be in different stages. I believe they are fixing to start rocking and rolling up shallow. A lot have stuck there noses in the current from the creeks and river and have started to migrate up the channels. Long lining swim baits behind the boat catching fish now. Won't be long and we'll be drowning big shad up shallow for the big sows that move in to gorge on gizzard shad.
