Theres been a lot of discussion about guys being upset that people are taking bass to the cleaning tables at Texas lakes and I have to ask......If you are one of these people that catches bass to eat, have you not been to a grocery store and purchased fish that actually taste good? I have eaten probably 20-30 different types of fish in my lifetime, and I have to say that bass is probably the worst! Its fishy as hell, boney as hell and is in no way considered a delicassy. I woukldnt eat a bass if it was given to me. Now Crappie and catfish are pretty good but damn.....bass??????I dont get that one.

I think one to three pound bass taste fine. I agree that larger bass taste like carp. And, while I hate to see 7+ lb. bass hit the cleaning stations, so long as the person is within' their legal right, you won't hear me poopooing them.
Coincidence is His way of remaining anonymous.

I don't eat them often but bass is one of my favorite fish to eat. They taste less fishy to me than catfish. Bass come in second to crappie.
By the way it is good for the health of the population to cull them. There seem to be more catch and release fisherman than the ones taking bass to the cleaning station.

I've always enjoyed eating bass. It isn't quite as good as crappie but is better than sandbass for sure. The bigger ones aren't as good. I've eaten a 10lber and it wasn't good.

Largemouth make for good eating, second only to Crappie and well ahead of catfish IMO. I prefer the 12"-14" size, but have been known to filet the occasional 5 lbr. According to the management of Slot Lakes we're all supposed to keep 5 unders every time we fish for the slot to work properly. I know I'm guilty of not keeping enough, as I only take em home a few times a year.

I was helping some buddies manage a pond at their hunting ranch and we were catching and keeping crappie and bass...one of them said to me "bass are nasty" so I did a blind taste test. I cooked both of them the same way on the grill in some foil and 3 of the 4 guys said the bass tasted better than the crappie but both were awesome. The bass were all 1-2# and eaten the same day they were caught. To me, just about any fish you eat the same day it's caught is very good with some obvious exceptions.

This isnt an issue of right or wrong, legal or illegal, whining or complaining. I dont care what a guy does at the cleaning table. I just really think they taste like chit! I didnt think that many people actually ate the damn things.

I caught a 12" inch Crappie, a 20" Channel Cat, and a 17" Bass Sunday (Crappie and Cat on minnows, The Bass on a small spinnerbait) Yesterday in the "Canal"- Boy, they tasted GREAT!!!If more anglers would practice catch and release,of the "Less Prestigious" species, just imagine how good the Crappie, Cat, etc. population would be.......

1 -2 pound bass are easy to filet and taste great. If I wasnt too lazy to clean them, I'd eat more of the little guys. Having grown up in South LA, eating bass, bream, and sacalait was part of fishing.

You've obviously never ate a nice 8 pounder from Falcon Lake. Bones? Filleted like a crappie, no bones at all in the meat. For me, bass is other white meat.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know when to go fishing.

Check your body of water and see if there are any consumption advisories. Many of our East Texas waters have a Mercury Advisory. (But I do find it strange that there are NO advisories for Lake Livingston (Trinity river run off from Dallas) and there IS an advisory for Sam Rayburn. ) http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/seafood/survey.shtm#advisory

I eat walleye a couple times a year and crappie in between.. so keeping a bass that's alive doesn't cross my mind.. Some friends at Falcon cooked up a delicious bass after one of the weigh-ins and it was better than the rest I'd had. There must be something in the water down there.. I wouldn't give the evil eye to anyone that is keeping any kind of fish as long as they are within their legal limit. To each his own..
