Thoughts on best/easiest baits for 9 year old kids to use in farm pond? Are the packaged shad at academy any good or go with punch bait?

a can of corn with garlic in it, let it sit overnight in the frige. Low cost, easy for a child to handle without a gross factor.

Hot dogs, bread, or sliced cheese. Bring it all and have a picnic. I like to use hot dogs cause you can use a J hook without having to fool with treble hooks and kids. You can buy the hot dogs with cheese impregnated and they work good. The cheaper the dogs the better, the cheap ones have more oils in them

All good ideas I would not have thought of doing. I tend to make it too complex...god figure. Definitely want to avoid the treble hooks with this bunch.

Heck if they get hungry they eat the dogs for themselves too.

My favorite way is to get a box of worms and the smallest perch hook you can find. Let the kids catch a 2 1/2 - 3 inch perch, hook him behind the tail on another rod about 2 ft. below a bobber with no weight. He'll pull that bobber around and either catch the biggest cat or bass in the pond. While that perch is fishing keep'em busy catching more perch. Have fun and good luck!!!

For kids I like baits that are easy to use, and stay on the hook.
I like worms, and shrimp. hotdogs come off of J hooks to easy

Chicken liver and sponges. Cut the sponge into small pieces. Add the sponges to the liver. Use both as bait on the bottom with a slip sinker and a medium sized treble hook.

We have a small pond where the cats are fed floating fish feed daily. We have no problem catching them on hotdogs. I buy the cheapest ones I can find, cut into 1/2 inch wide pieces and put on a 3/0 circle hook going through the skin twice. We put them under a bobber about 1 foot off the bottom.
The hookup rate is about 50% but that's ok. We never deep hook fish and rebaiting keeps the nephews busy.
