Anybody else grow up hearin a drum called a Gasper Goo ? That's Cajun for "BIG UGLY" (Gaspergou)-Up north those Yankees call em' "SHEEPHEAD". My Pops used to call Bass "Green Trout" haha.... It's not Boiled Shrimp, Crabs, or Crawfish in my family...It's Bald...

For me perch is what got me. up north theres the yellow perch so i always called "perch" sunfish or bluegill. I agree. Calling any small fish a perch is what sets my teeth on edge. Calling a drum a Gaspergou is OK because it is a nickname and not the name of another fish but calling a Sunfish a Perch is just ignorance. It is exactly the same as calling a Crappie a Bass. Any fisherman ought to know the difference.

I've read that gaspergoo is a mis pronunciation of some french (Cajun) words meaning muscle eater. I forgot what the words were. I've heard them called sheepshead too.

You were close. Origin: 180010, Americanism ; < Louisiana French casburgot, French casse-burgot, equivalent to cass ( er ) to break + burgeau a kind of shellfish
