During Lent we have fish frys every Friday night. I am trying to stock up the freezer and got into a discussion about the "proper" way to freeze the filets with a buddy. He mentioned to put water in the bag along with the filets and it will keep them from getting freezer burn. I had never heard of this as i have always just put them in the freezer as is. Is there any truth to what he said? if so how much water is needed? thanks for the help.

Yes, it's better to submerge in water before freezing, but that can pick up more precious space in your freezer. If you can invest in a food saver vacuum type, you can freeze with no water...6-8mos is still great!

I use a Zip-Loc freezer bag . Put the fillets in , seal it except for about 1" and pour the water in . When full, squeeze out all the air and close the bag.
My grandparents used empty paper milk cartons.

My grandparents used empty paper milk cartons. Same here just added a little salt to the water.

Right on Siberman. That is the way I was taught and the fish keep for a year or more without freezer burn.

Air causes freezer burns. Water covering the fillets or a food saver prevents the air contact.

The Foodsaver method works very well without water, which does twomthings for you. 1. Space saving in freezer. 2. Thaws out quickly when you are ready to cook.

You can also put fillets in a freezer bag and then lower the bag into a sink full of water until the water pressure pushes out all the air. Poor mans food saver

My grandparents used empty paper milk cartons. Funny! My dad always used milk cartons before zip locks were prominent. I remember milk cartons frozen full of whole bluegills. We always used milk cartons for ice too. Never had to buy block ice. I still do this today. I've switch to zip locks for the fish though. I have a food saver but I'm just too lazy to deal with it. I'd rather just cover em in water and squeeze out the air.

I have been storing both fish and game by first putting in the cheap fold top sandwich bags, then freezer paper. If you can get the plastic to cover all meat, then no freezer burn. I didn't like freezing in water as it too, has lots of air in it and can be seen after freezing.
Eat em' fast and there is no issue!
