I am going crappie fishing next month. I'll be using my 6.5'ight spinning rods. They are loaded with 12lb silver thread. Is that too heavy? It's relatively new and I don't realy want to change line. How about a lighter leader? FWIW, I'll be fishing LBJ, hopefully with a guide. I suppose I could use his equipment, but I'd rather use my own. capt david

Weight depends on depth and type of fishing. No wind and fishing 12ft or less on brush piles, 3/8 oz may be enough. Slow trolling in 30-35ft, I like a 1/2 to 3/4 oz depending on the wind and how fast I'm moving. This is fishing with minnows with sinker on the bottom; one or two drops above the sinker.

Stren clear blue 8 pound for me, but the thing is being able to see the line. I can see that 8 pound line really well in all conditions, so if that slab comes up with my jig i gottim!!! But experiment with your own stuff and fish with what gives you confidence, you got some time till your big trip, why not go load up the fridge aannnddd see what kind of line ya like. Jess

6lb or 4lb mr crappie, but I'm trying some suffix 6lb.
Get something you are comfortable fishing with, something you can see, but most of all a line weight you are confident in
Good luck

12 lb test will work for ya. You may be fishing tight cover and it may come in handy. I normally use 10 lb test most of the year.

Crappie string is a big problem for me too.
I've use Suffix 6lb and when I pull the crappie out I break off a lot.
Trilene 10lb XL works good so far but I would like to use the smallest I can get away with and still have enough strength not to have to use a net.
I also use a few underspin reels and most all string so far kinks up bad.
I just got some Wally Marshall 6lb and 8lb but haven't got to try it yet.
I'm also interested in reading reviews on this post about the best string.
