I recently was given a filet board as a gift. I have never used one or seen one used.
I grab the fish by the mouth & fin and go to town. Do one side & flip it over and do the other. I do ok if I do say so myself. Clean cut & quick!!
So, if anyone can shed some light on the filet board, I won't mount a magnet to the back of it & use it as a "MAN'S" post-it note holder.
Thanks in advance,

Thats a good one. I would probably use it for notes on the fridge myself. I share your method of just grabbing them by the mouth and fin. It takes too long to clamp their heads everytime you want to flip em' ------------------ Hal Dodd Arlington- Home Fishing Guide www.HowellDodd.4t.com

The Fisherman's Solution is an adjustable length fillet knife (6-9") with Cam-Lock and a sheath that has a line cuter, sharpening stone, and fish gripper. Click on "Products", then click on "Sporting Knives" and find the Fisherman's Solution. You will not need a "fillet board" with the attached gripper that holds the fish by the jaw. I use a 3-foot long piece of 2 x 10 board to support the fish while filleting. My folks bought me one of these many years ago and it was the BEST fillet knife I have ever owned until I dropped it over the side of a fish cleaning table into Lake Tawakoni several years ago. I have since bought another one and it always stays sharp with just a few licks on the sharpening stone. It is expensive (about $65) but after you've used it once, you'll never own another fillet knife! [This message has been edited by redfin (edited 12-06-2003).]

The plastic fillet boards are dishwasher safe, so they clean up real nice. Also have a "hole" which are good for catfish.
A board will do just as well. But the above two reasons make me use my fillet board.

Gee, looks neat but what do you use it for? When I clean fish I use a electric knife and average better than 1 fish per min. I use a 2x12 about 24 to 36 inches long. If I get some good size catfish sometimes I will nail their head to the board to help pull the skin. This is what works for me. Go Fish, Jim

So Steve-O, When you use the board do you clamp head or tail? Do you re-clamp for the second side?
I am so lost on this thing, to me it seems like by the time I could clamp the fish to the board, (or is it the board to the fish?) I could have two slabs of fish.
Oh well, if I get enough info I'll give it a try. Thanks for all the input!!

I think they are more trouble than they are worth. It takes time to turn the fish over (unclamp, flip, reclamp) and that will slow you way down. Clamping and unclamping with slimey hands is not easy. The board I had was also too narrow so I had to unclamp the fish before I could remove the skin.
I got tired of that board so I went and got the biggest plastic cutting board they had at Target - I think it was $10 - $15. It works great and cleans up easy. They have some even bigger ones at BPS for $25. I'll have to think about drilling a hole in it for cat fins - that might be easier than cutting off the fins (maybe not?).
my 2 cents

I use a piece of Corian countertop for my fillet board. Went by a new house that was under construction the day the counter tops were being delivered. The plumber was cutting out a section for a double sink, when asked he simply gave it to me. Makes a great fillet board, easy to clean and store.

boil a large pot of water- while its boiling- dunk the catfish in it- now take a washrag and wipe the skin off. Quick and easy! Older lady at grocery store told me that one night.

HUH why would I stick my fish in boiling water then fillet and freeze. Not trying to be rude but, I can clean and skin a catfish before your done wiping away the skin. As for filleting my fish I just use a flat surface usually my boat hull and fillet down the bone holding with my hand. Big cats I hang in a tree and dress and fillet while hanging using a very sharp skinning knife to cut off the bone to loose less meat.

I love the clamp boards when I am cleaning flounder. The way I filet a flounder I make good use of the clamp.
For most other fish I clean, it is not very useful.

so, does anyone need a "LARGE" message holder, I mean a fillet board? Oh well, it didn't cost me anything. I thought I had seen some TV show host fillet a fish once with out flipping from one side to the other. If so, I thought for sure I would get the details here. I can always nail it to the wall of my carport & hang my floor mat on it when I wash the ride. ------------------ GOOD LUCK & TIGHT LINES!
