IF it is the voltage regulator, I wouldn't keep running it. You can start to burn up other electrical components. You don't say what year, model, size engine it is, but I would check all connections first, then test things with a volt-meter before you buy a voltage regulator. May just be a bad connection or bad tach.

Try this: Check the connections on the backside of your tach. Also put a volt meter on your tach connections and see if you're getting voltage to the tach. Could be a broken wire somewhere. Also, with a fully charged battery, crank the engine(on the garden hose), let it idle, and put a volt meter on the cranking battery and see what it reads. I'm not familiar with that particular model engine, but I would think it should read between 13-14 volts. Someone here familiar with Yamahas can say for sure. I would also remove the engine cowl and check all the wire connections on the powerhead. I think the gray wire is for the tach. One other option is if you have a fishing buddy that would loan you a tach for a few minutes to try. Takes five minutes to install. Again, be sure you have good, clean tight connections everywhere. Very important. It may very well be the voltage regulator, but check the simple easy stuff first. Good Luck,
Kenny C.
