I am considering switching from a stock blend to a synthetic blend; running a 225 Optimax.
Does it hurt to mix these two types of oil? Any special precautions to take? I guess at some point they will get mixed if you are switching from one to the other.
Just curious before I make the switch.

KB--You can mix the stock blend and the synthetic with no problem, but if I were you, I would run the inboard oil tank as low as you can and then add the synthetic. That way you will only have to run out the little tank on the motor before you have the full synthetic oil. But they will mix with no problems.

Hey! Have seen 4 motors messed up from this. Pre-mix OK to mix, Oil-injection mixing is a No-No. Will cause a film that will clog the screen in the oil tank. Empty your oil tank & secondary tank, wash out with clean gas & clean the pickup screen before changing over to synthetic.Do not use any kind of rag or towel. Lint can be fatal. Fill both tanks with synthetic and your good to go. What is left in lines and pump will not hurt. I belive this has caused a lot of oil injection problems. The synthetic`s are the way to go on your motor.

Thanks for the feedback.
Maybe a little more work to get out the old but considering the possible consequences, it could be well worth it.

KB--Don't know where Gary gets his information, but this is taken right off the Mercury Optimax DFI-2 Oil site. Make up your own mind. The Optimax oil is not a full synthetic oil. It is a synthetic blend.
OPTIMAX/DFI ENGINE OIL
Synthetic blend 2-cycle engine oil, specifically formulated and developed to meet the needs of:
OptiMax and Direct Fuel Injected (DFI) 2-cycle outboard engines.
1. Provides the maximum protection for OptiMax and DFI engines even under the most extreme operating conditions. 2. Outperforms other oils by combining a carefully modified base stock blend with a synthetic additive package. 3.Minimizes carbon build-up to help maintain engine's top end speed and acceleration. Superior lubrication for increased resistance to scuffing. 4."Will mix with typical 2-cycle engine oils". 5.Provides warranty protection for Mercury and Mariner OptiMax and DFI outboards.
