Kinda like having brake lights. The angle of the pic you can see the lights in the cowling but from the seats, it has a nasty glow of red. I used two 60 LED strips for the poles and a 30 LED strip for the cowling. All wires were ran thru the hydraulic hose inlet into the boat thru the rodsox that covers them so there are no exposed wires. The cowling was a chore, finding right spot, to running wires. There is a switch mounted on the dash so they are controlled independently from the courtesy lights switch. Only have cell phone pics will get some on the water soon hopefully. These are for looks, not navigation.

I like the bling. Did you put LED's in the intakes on your cowl? Won't restrict airflow?

Is it legal to have red like that since red is used to tell other boaters what direction a boat is going? If legal its cool. Maybe blue or white would be legal if red is not

Wont affect airflow a bit, its a small strip thats in there and placed on the very bottom of the cylinder cone inside a SHO. Great question though. I ran the very tiny wire (use doorbell wire from home depot) down the side and thru the hose going into the boat. I made a quick disconnect inside so when removing cowling you can disconnect the wires. There is also an inline fuse used.

+1 Red is a directional color on the water. Perhaps a blue and white dico ball hung on an upside down J hook would have given you the same anti-fog effect.

Sweet! Thanks for the explanation. And great idea on the quick disconnects. Typical Aggie, always forward thinking in the realm of mechanics thumb

That would make anyone with led lights in their boat that are green or red illegal. They are not illegal, you still must use the required navigational lights.

Who cares if it's illegal it looks sweet! Btw I'm sure its not illegal as long as you have your normal nav lights. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/boat/safety/vessel_requirements/ this does not say anything about too many lights.

To the guys asking about legality while running public waters, no, those are not legal for navigation. Down the highway, in line to launch, etc. tho....pretty sweet. You'll see a bunch of the Elite guys with similar set-ups this season.

Actually, it is illegal. The ONLY red and green lights visible while underway are to be on the center of the bow and visible for x degrees, just as shown in figures x and y in the TPWD info you posted. Sometimes, you have to literally interpret what is not written in the TPWD codes. The examples provided in the reference material are such an example. Although it is not stated, the images represent the ONLY place where lights of those colors shall be displayed.
