Lubbock has been home my whole life with the exception of a few years spent in the DFW area. I have to say that I have never fished Buffalo Springs Lake. Those that know the lake have all heard the rumors about sewage water. Does anyone know the real story and is it safe to eat fish out of BSL? I am sure any water that is going in to the lake is treated. However, LOL... I do remember a year or two ago a guy caught some fish that had human teeth. Or looked like human teeth. Stangest thing I had ever seen.

i been in the lubbock area since 68 and the only thing i have caught out of buffalo lake was a striper on a 14 inch black worm with yellow tail 15 lber thought i had caught big bass of the day
and no i would not eat anything that came out that place
yes the sewer plant had run over several times with raw sewage down into the creek that feeeds the lake from yellowhouse canyon reason it ran over was due to the sewage pumps shut down and the pumps went out and so the sewage from town filled up the containment and ran over
That Bass dont care if your in a Ranger boat or a metal bathtub with a trolling motor mounted to it if he aint biting neither will do you any good

The treated sewage is discharged below Ransom Canyon. The canyon lakes are designed to filter the rain runoff before is reaches Buffalo. When I lived in Lubbock, I ate catfish and crappie I caught from there.

Yeah...the treated wastewater goes into Yellowhouse Canyon below Ransom Canyon, so Buffalo is safe. There are some large stripers in that lake. They have done alot of work around the marina in the past 5-7 years...it isn't your daddy's old Buffalo Springs Lake anymore.

The storm water also drains into the canyon past Buffalo. The Stripers are coming back after re-stocking after the bloom. I was told by the lake warden that they were catching some near legal size. I think the water in the lake is fine, it does have a very high algae content.
A bad day on the lake is much better than a good day at work!

One other point...Richland Chambers is all TREATED WASTEWATER! It is the new normal and a great idea in keeping Texas water within our borders.
Especially since Oklahoma will not sell their excess that runs into the Red and is wasted.

The only real problem BSL has is Golden Algae, and it gets hit a good bit due to its size. I have a friend who went out there and tore up the crappie in that lake, ate them and said they were pretty good. I wouldn't worry too much about eating the fish out of there. Now the Lubbock Canyon lakes on the other hand is a different story.

dont know about the water but the toothed fish is a pacu. its rare but not unheard of to catch amazon fish. lake travis has piranha in it. some one released bunch of red bellies(meat eaters) in the lake so TPW released some that only eat the red bellies and not the other fish population.
