When I catch a fish I want to enjoy it. The best way to enjoy and prolong the catch is to fish places were you have a shot at fighting the fish in open water. I used to tournament fish but I'm glad to be free from that slam'em in the boat mentality.

In my opinion, it really depends on where you are fishing. If I'm crashing my square bill through timber, I'll go with Braid. Seems like every time I hook one, it bolts for the nearest tree.

To each his own. I use 30lb Power Pro braid on my cranks with a Lowrider MH. Works great for me, but might not for someone else.

I did an article for BassWest a few years ago on deep cranking and one thing that stood out to me is how more than a couple of guys that are always in the money in Bass Champs etc that I interviewed were using braid on deep cranks. I will see if I still have the article scanned in the PC and will pull it up but again more than a couple of them preferred braid.

I just put 20# braid on my spinning reel to fish cranks with. It has the same diameter as 6# mono. I hope to have good results with it.

about 15 years ago, I spooled up with spider wire on one of my rods. the first snag i got, I pulled against it and the spider wire buried up on the spool and finally I had to cut it off the spool to clean up the mess. Later I spooled the reel with mono and added about 100 yards of spider wire on top. That seemed to solve the problem. Is this still a problem with braid, or am I just weird ?

I still have the same problem if i try to pull the line like that. to solve this I have wrapped the line around the handle of my net and pulled that way... no more issue and no strain on my reel. I have pulled up huge branches this way

Another option with braid is Suffix 832 it does not float. I have been against braid from the beginng but a friend of mine has changed my thought. Just like some of the others above I will crank and throw a jerkbait with it using 20# braid and 10# flouro leader on a soft spinning rod. When your fishing smaller cranks like a wiggle wart you feel everything, when you stop feeling set the hook. Good luck.

One other aspect to consider is how fast that braid reacts one when bouncing off cover and two when a fish tries to inhale it. With braid your crankbait will pull back onto its cranking path a lot faster than it will with mono. Ever felt a crank on mono or flouro rdeflect and almost pause a second before it get slammed. When it hits the richochet effect creates a dazed moment look which induces a lot of bites. Sometimes the quick reset could get u more bites.
Second when a fish goes to inhale a crank if you have a faster reacting line like braid you increase the chance that the bait will be pulled away before the fish gets it all the way back as good. Years ago there was some debates on fiberglass rods versuses the sensitivity of graphite rods. In the article several pros noted that the slight delay in deteting the bite slightly slower with fiberglass helped with fish being hooked better. The argument was that graphite being more sensitive you would feel the bite quicker and react quicker before fish inhaled it as deep.
