I've had alot of clients ask me about micro guides lately so I thought I would post it here on TFF. Maybe this will help anyone with questions. Mico guides are not a new thing they have been around since 1960 they never became popular until now. The small frame made it hard for them to hold the inserts now with new technology they have gotten better. The plus side to micros is that you can gain distance in cast, gives you better control when fighting a fish , they eliminate back lashes. The down side is that micro clog up when fishing around duck weed and tree pollen that is on the water, they will also freeze up in cold weather condition. And even though technology has made them better they do not hold up well to braided line. I hope this helps anyone that is planning on making a purchase with micro guides

With the greatest respect for a brother rod builder, I will take exception to some of your 'down side' statements. Duck weed and pollen will NOT clog the guides no matter how small the guides are. If one fishes in extremely cold climates, there could be a problem with freezing, but not in our southern states.

My biggest exception is to your statement: "...they do not hold up well to braided line"

Every time I have seen someone profess this over the past 4+ years of building rods with micro guides, I have asked to see a picture or some other evidence of this actually occuring. To date, there has been no proof. It simply does not happen.

Braid is very smooth and there is absolutely no way that there is enough friction caused by line movement to damage a ceramic guide.

Again; no offence intended.

I gotta agree with Bobby. I have not seen any evidence of problems with braided line. I have been using micros on my personal flipping stick for several years with no problems. I have sent out numerous micro rods to guys using heavy braid and have not had a single problem with the line damaging the guides. I also agree with Bobby that duckweed and pollen do not clog the guides. Also, be careful about making unrealistic claims... micros do not "eliminate backlashes", but they do help.

Bobby is who got us interested in micros long before all the big rod companies started coming out with a micro guide line. I even remember him telling me to watch it won't be long before everyone switches over. He was right!!!

We build mostly micro guides and I think durability depends on the person using and taken care of them. I have put some rods through some testing with braid with no issues. Most problems with inserts that have come out are from being stepped on, jammed in the rod box, or reeling the lure or weight all the way up to tip. Using rod six and being careful with any rod will make these rods last a really long time.

None taken Bobby I'm just going by my past experance with micros. I'm not saying micros are a bad thing I think they have their place and will place them on any rod a client ask me to. I just think if you are going to fish braid you can go with a smaller concept guide that has been proven with braided line and by using a graphite reel seat you can come up with a sensitive and well balance combo.

Guys the Proof Is In The Pudding -

If you have any doubts about where the present day use of micro guides originated read this information. This is one of six Internet Forum threads that set the stage for BETTER RODS FOR BASS ANGLERS.

Braid?? They really shine when braid is in use? No down side simple better across the board.

There are no doubts - millions are now in use!

Like Bobby F. said Put Em On The Scale Dewey!

Wait till you see the next line Bobby draws in the dirt outside the box!

This one will really be fun!

Thanks for the info Reel Time. I picked up a couple of your rods at MPO a couple months ago and they felt like really nice sticks. As technology has gotten better on the micro guides, it seems like the high quality non-micro guides have also gotten smaller too, so the benefits you might see from the micro guides may not be as significant as they were a few years ago. The guides on my Dobyns rods are half the size of the guides on my lightning rod. I myself have no issue with the normal guides and will stick with those. But I appreciate someone explaining it simply on here for the amateurs amongst us like myself.
