I know to charge my trolling battery after every use, but what about the cranking battery? How often do you put it on the charger?

I have to lug mine around, so I can't just run out to the boat w/ext. cord and a charger.

Most tournament anglers use a 3 bank charger to boost the cranking battery. I charge mine each time I plug the boat in when I get off the water.

While the O/B Engine alternator charges the cranking battery when you run...it still has a pretty good load with depth finders, lights, livewells...ect.

If you dont make long runs to fish the charging cycle from the alternator may not be enough to keep the Cranking Battery Topped Off.

A 3 bank charger is good insurance against cranking battery failure on the water. thumb

if you don;t have an onboard charger, set your charger on Auto the night before and you'll be fine.
The only thing worse than a Skunk is a dead battery.

I am making runs around chasing Stripers w/my little 40 horse. I bought a dual purpose battery for my TM just in case I need to crank w/it too.

I'll start topping off the cranking batt. on a regular interval as well.

Thanks for the advice.

I top mine off every other trip, too. 2 amps...auto cutoff. ( which dont always work , btw)

Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

When is the second anniversary TFF get together? I might actually fly in for that. So many good folks, so much distance. Besides, I haven't been outta Bama since I got here! I'm a good ole southron, but they think I'm a yankee down here!

Need to get back to Tejas.

We go to the lake at least once a week. I have never charged my cranking battery when regularly using the boat.

My boat only has a 2 bank on-board charger for the TM batteries. For the crank, I have a 12V@1A keeper charger that I put on while off the water. Since the outboard will charge a good bit running, I just use it to keep the battery topped off between trips. Operates just like the on-board charger (auto-shutoff and monitor).

Here is a link to what I use:
