the bendx(sp) on my starter isnt engaging i have to take a cresnet wrench and a pair of channel locks to free it.im not talking about alot of pressure either. somthing is making it stick. once freed it will start and get stuck again. i placed some oil on it(not much) to help it slide. any ideas.

Larry..my merc 125 outboard did the same darn thing. I sprayed some WD40 on the bendix assembly and that seem to have done the trick. But it has re-occurred a couple more times. I have been told that the solenoid may need changing. Any engine mechanics out there care to chime in?

Larry, You probably need to take the starter off, remove the bendix, clean the armature and lube with light weight grease, make sure there isn't a burr on the shaft. If this doesn't solve your problem then you may need to replace the bendix. What ever you do don't spray a lot of lubricant on the armature when it is on the motor because the lube can get to the brushes and destroy them.

Good Luck, Tommy Yetts
