how far out in the gulf do yall think would be a safe estimate with a 17' deep vee cruiser? Im fixing to procure a partialy built Glen-l Carioca hull, and will be building it with an abreviated cabin. The boat is rated for up to a 130hp engine, but ive seen at least one person running as low as a 50hp claiming a 30mph speed with it. I would very much like to be able to run offshore(at least a ways), but im not shure this boat can do it.

Depends on the seas and the size of your boys. Just be smart about it.

That is a day to day call... There are days when you can go out on a surfboard, and there are days you wouldn't want to be out in an oil tanker. Common sense and good judgement will be your guide.
30 mph with a 50 on a deep v tuna schooner? Very doubtful.

I have taken my 18' Deep V center console over 50 miles out. I have had her in seas of at least 8 foot. It aint much fun and you do have to know how to drive in high seas but it is pretty safe. The rule is...if it is rough...do not launch. If it gets rough...go to port. Rough is anything over 2 foot (going out) or 3 foot (when offshore) or wind of over 15mph. Simply..if it's too rough to be fun...get off the water.

An underpowered, slow cumbersome hull can and will get you in more trouble faster than anything else.
Not having enough power to push you up and over waves is disaster about to happen. Please don't think that heavy boat will perform with a small motor on it.

Im going on the recomendations of the manufacturer and the other folks who have built them. the hull is rated up to a 135, but most of the ones in the product registry on glen-l seem to be using 50-100 motors. Glenn-l is odd with there power rating systems, and usualy they just give a max weight.....
However, im starting to reconsider this hull. The cost involved will be nearly as high as that of a much larger inboard powered cruiser and not nearly as useful.
The double eagle hull is a 24' semi-planning hull versus the 17' carioca. Its not much wider on the beam, but is designed for larger water.
on top of wich i realy want to build the hull myself.....

If your boat is not a self bailing hull you shouldn't take it out in the gulf. That is just my feeling on the matter. If it happens to get rough on you and it will catch you sooner or later you will start to hit waves that will dump water in your boat. A bilge pump is a must but if the seas are rough it won't keep up.The offshore seas are very unforgiving. ---Smitty

I built a glen-l "little hunk" (in the registry under Arlon). It was a very capable orugh water hull. It's a surf dory design, low power and very seaworthy. Also very easy to build. I also like the bateau.com 25 panga style boat. http://www.bateau.com/products.php?cat=18 Something about the stitch/glue approach I find appealing. I also liked the tolman skiff.. http://www.backporchboat.com/

Are you really looking to build the boat? If you are looking for an already built boat that needs restoring my brother has replaced his boat but has a nice(looks like it to me) restorable 20' plus boat sitting on my fathers place near Nixon. It has a soft transom....
I asked him if he was going to sell it and I think he just doesn't want to go to the trouble. It has two OMC 150's that he said a friend wanted but has no plans for the boat.

Its fiberglass w/tandem trailer. I believe it has a bimini? The motors are on a setback plate I believe. Outboards.
Come to think of it I will call him and get the information so I don't lie to you about it. I'm not sure he wants to get rid of I will find out.
It is in repairable condition just needs some work.
