 motor wont start

I got to the ramp yesterday to load the boat and it died at the dock. I tried to start it and it just makes a humming noise and won't try to turn over. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be?

what engine, hp etc.
sounds like it could be low battery or bad starter.

Did you remove the cowling and see if the starter engaged or was it just spinning and not moving up to engage.

It is a Johnson 25 HP. No I did not check the starter to see if it engaged. I will do that tomorrow.

Pull the rope. Seriously could be the starter solenoid, the starter, battery cable, not in neutral or switch defective.
